The park surrounding the Kempinski Palace was declared as a natural monument in 1983 because of its unique and creative arrangement of trees and flowers. Portorož is one of the best-known tourist destinations in Slovenia and one of the most important tourist centres on the Slovene coast. It is well known for its fragrant roses, the harbour, its salt pans, for the mild climate, the surrounding hills and its friendly, outgoing people. Today, Portorož is recognized as a cosmopolitan tourist centre on the northern Adriatic coast, offering the best in catering, hotel trade and culture and boasting one of the most beautiful and modern marinas in the Adriatic, an airport and casinos. Hotel guests and congress or event participants can indulge in a shopping spree in the Kempinski Palace Shopping Gallery, with shops offering selected items made by top international manufacturers. The guests can have their pick of various water sports with an emphasis on sailing; a tennis centre with a tennis stadium and 13 clay courts is situated in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Golf courses can be found in the idyllic town of Lipica – Golf Club Lipica (40 km) and on the Italian side of the border in Trieste - Golf Club Trieste (35 km).
